Gingrich ethics case

It was a huge victory for Democrats. They had deeply wounded the speaker. But they wanted more, and they pressed the IRS to investigate.

Experts examined every word Gingrich spoke in every class; they examined the financing and administration of the course; and they examined how the course might have fit into Gingrich’s political network.

In the end, in 1999, the IRS released a highly detailed 74-page report that concluded the course was, in fact, a legitimate educational exercise. “The ‘Renewing American Civilization’ course was educational … and not biased toward any of those who were supposed to be benefited,” the IRS concluded.

The bottom line: Gingrich acted properly and violated no laws. Of course, by that time, Gingrich was out of office, widely presumed to be guilty of something, and his career in politics was (seemingly) over. Now he’s having to fight the fight all over again. Byron York

Among the claims going out through the mass media in Florida, on the eve of that state’s primary election, is that Newt Gingrich “resigned in disgrace” as Speaker of the House of Representatives, as a result of unethical conduct involving the diversion of tax-exempt money. Mitt Romney is calling on Gingrich to release “all of the records” from the House of Representatives investigation.

But the Wall Street Journal of January 28, 2012 reported that these records — 1,280 pages of them — are already publicly available on-line. Although Speaker Gingrich decided not to take on the task of fighting the charge from his political enemies in 1997, the Internal Revenue Service conducted its own investigation which, two years later, exonerated Gingrich from the charges. His resignation was not due to those charges and occurred much later. Thomas Sowell

For Santorum

Santorum is an eloquent spokesperson for the culture of life. He has been savaged and ridiculed by leftist elites for upholding traditional family values — not just in word, but in deed.

He won Iowa through hard work and competent campaign management. Santorum has improved in every GOP debate and gave his strongest performance last week in Florida, wherein he both dismantled Romneycare and popped the Newt bubble by directly challenging the front-runners’ character and candor without resorting to their petty tactics.

He rose above the fray by sticking to issues.

Most commendably, he refused to join Gingrich and Perry in indulging in the contemptible Occupier rhetoric against Romney. Character and honor matter. Santorum has it.-Michelle Malkin

Pipeline to Texas

Actually, building refineries in the northern states isn’t such a bad idea as some are saying. Why pipe oil across the country and truck it back again? There are a lot of products besides gasoline that come from oil that northern factories might use. Sure there are plenty of refineries in Texas already, but has anyone really thought this out?

Like the current presidential candidates, who all have personal screwball ideas set in stone, the business and technical leaders in this country get wild hairs they can’t let go of. It’s probably too late for this pipeline, as the Canucks won’t wait for us to argue it out, but in the future we need leaders in government and industry who can think things through.

A Few Words About Abortion

If the baby in the womb is a person, then all abortion is unlawful. That’s because of the constitutional protection for all persons. The Constitution unambiguously prohibits the government from impairing or permitting others to impair the life, liberty and property of persons without due process. Here’s my political beef with so-called pro-life politicians in both parties. In the years in which the pro-life Ronald Reagan and both Presidents Bush were in the White House, from time to time, both chambers of Congress had pro-life majorities. Did you see any legislation passed that declared a baby in the womb to be a person? No. This could have been done by a simple majority vote and presidential signature, and Roe vs. Wade, and all the killing it spawned, would have ended.Judge Andrew P. Napolitano

The President

Chuck Norris was way off on his ten questions to ask presidential candidates. His number one quality was respect for human life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. He was right on there. That’s the reason we have a Constitution. To protect the rights spelled out in the Declaration of Independence.

But what does the President do? Well, lots of things he’s not supposed to. But he’s the Commander in Chief supposed to protect the rights proclaimed in the Constitution and the head of the Postal Service. And he’s the administrator in charge of the lawful acts of Congress. Sure, he has to protect the peace too.

He only has one thing to do with the economy. Protect it from crooks, in this country and others. It’s not his job to meddle in the economy or turn it around. He needs to be able to communicate, but he’s not auditioning for the debating team. I know where he’s coming from, but he’s going nowhere. We need to run and elect the best man we can find and get. Compromise in politics is the name for losing. If you won’t stand up for what you believe, don’t expect anyone to stand with you. That’s why conservatives have been losing since the founding of this country. The other side won’t budge. Not if you’ll back down.

You don’t have to have the perfect candidate now. Just elect the best you have. If you keep electing the good guys, the better guys will start running. If you elect the lesser of two evils who can win in November, just the evil will run. There are a lot of good and qualified people who just aren’t running.

There’s not a lot I can say about the men running for President. They all have faults and their supporters are probably all biased. Just pause and take an unbiased look at all of them and pick the best one for the job. Running the one who can win in November seldom works anyway.
P.S. Take our poll.

New Poll

Please take our poll and answer all the questions. It won’t tell us anything if you just vote for your favorite and don’t make the other choices. If half of the country doesn’t like a candidate, and three fourths of the other half don’t either, that’s 87.5%. If he’s the front runner, what does that say about our political process? If two people get 60% of the vote and have a runnoff, that means 70% of the people didn’t want the winner. Take our poll.
